Battle of the Mid Range Eye Shadow Primer: Smashbox vs. Too Faced

This battle will be focusing on Smashbox’s 24 Photo Finish Shadow Primer and Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Primer. I must say I own both of these and have worn them in the past week in preparation for this post (I even took some fancy-dancey photos for you guys).

Shadow Insurance by Too Faced is a widely raved about primer and is often compared to Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. It retails at Sephora for $24 and lasts a long time (I got mine in June and I’ve barely put a dent in it).

Although, the name claims to be anti-creasing I have had it crease on me –on occasion. This was due to, too little product or lazy application ( I wrote about how to properly apply eyeshadow primer in an earlier post).

The amount of product you use is about the size of a grain of rice per eyelid. It comes out as a tinted cream in a champagne colour that is barely noticeable to the naked eye when blended.

The Primer claims to be 24 hours (and it probably is) at most I have worn it for about 15-16 hours without issue. I found it works best with Too Faced eye shadows they go together like peanut butter and jelly.

The Smashbox Photo Finish 24 hour Primer was the first eye primer I owned.  I have purchased it at both Sephora and Shopper’s Drug Mart and retails for about $25.

I found that this Primer takes more work than the Too Faced primer. I would highly recommend when applying this Primer that you let it sit for a couple minutes before applying a transition shade. The product settles into your crease line and you can prolong the wear of it if you blend it out before powder.

The product itself is a pink toned paste and can be noticeable if you do not blend it down enough. I do not like the packaging because when you get done to the bottom of the tube there is a lot of product leftover that is hard to get out (just like toothpaste).

I found the Smashbox Primer worked great with a dryer or looser eye shadows. Urban Decay worked particularly great with it.

Who is the winner in the battle of the mid-range eyeshadow primers? Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Primer!

The Too Faced Primer is more reliable than the Smashbox Primer and takes less maintenance to ensure a flawless finish. As for the price point, it is a whole $1 cheaper so buy yourself a coffee!

You use less of the Too Faced Primer over the Smashbox Primer (I found that I had to add the product to make sure my eyes were covered). This is partly because of the packaging you use more product squeezing it out a tube whereas the Too Faced Primer had a thin cap squeeze tube that provided the right amount of product. I actually found myself trying to wipe in the extra product that I accidentally squeezed from the Smashbox tube.

Overall, I consider the Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer a holy grail product because I know it’s reliable and for the investment, it lasts forever.
