How To Get Over A Plateau

Earlier this year I was struggling with the progression of my weight loss. Despite upping my weights, doing more cardio and eating more carbs I was stuck in a plateau for months.

I tried it all, different types of exercises in all forms, intensities, and endurance. Although my body was looking more toned the fat layer just seemed to stay in place.

It was starting to destroy the self-confidence I had gained from the weight loss

So how did I solve this pesky issue?

I changed my diet.

The Back Story

I wasn’t actively seeking to change my diet, it was a fluke.

In fact, I was reading a study about the effects of gluten causing adult acne. Which I had pretty bad.

I changed to a gluten free diet and there were numerous other side effects. These included clear skin, more energy, and less bloating.

Bloating that was causing me to plateau.

Watching The Pounds Melt Off

As I progressed with this new diet, the pounds were melting off like nothing before. I’ve noticed a big reduction in my trouble areas and my confidence has come completely back.

I’ve had never been happier with my weight loss progression.

I just wanted to share with those who have hit a plateau this can mean a plethora of things. However changing exercises, going up on weights, adding reps, and changing your diet are all great places to start.

    Weight loss has always been a major struggle in my life. Never got any help from doctors over the years. (The things these so-called professionals said to me was horrific!) I tried all kinds of different diets, strategies, etc. Nutrisystem helped me take off 50 lbs. but now I’m sick of the food and need to jump start my diet somehow. Your post has given me the motivation to try gluten free. Thank you!

    Well done for staying focused and pushing through! I am so prone to loosing hope and giving up so it’s good to hear that perseverance does pay off. Was it hard to switch to gluten free? In terms of availability of food and creating tasty but easy meals?

      Yes and no. The first month was a little drastic. Everything has wheat in it. From malt vinegar to sausages. So just becoming aware of what I couldn’t have was a little overwhelming.

      Then I got really into baking and cooking and it hasn’t bothered me since.

    Good read – I always enjoy finding out what works for others. May I add a few other suggestions to help bust that through plateau that have worked for me in the past – calorie cycling (best to google, I don’t know that I would explain it well enough), a.m. cardio on an empty stomach or after a cup of coffee, eating more frequently, and as backwards as it sounds eating more calories (many people do not realize they are not experiencing weight loss due to deprivation and that oh so frequently cited but often unacknowledged ‘starvation mode’).

    I think you are so right. Making a few small changes to your diet can rapidly make a difference. I know that eating too much bread makes me feel sluggish, sleepy, bloated and just generally unhappy. I love bread so much, but it doesn’t love me. So I decided to instigate a bread ban. It immediately made a difference in how I felt and on the scales. Thank you for reminding me what a good idea it is to make these little changes 🙂
